Hundreds of thousands of letters, packages and parcels from abroad have to be processed in December and January. But not every gift ordered online is met with joy by the recipient. Whether from Asia, the States or Australia, so-called third-country goods can turn out to be an expensive present. Most bargain hunters do not think about the statutory taxes and customs duties. An MP3 player can be more expensive than in the store. And if it is a counterfeit, the gift does not end up on the gift table, but is confiscated and destroyed without replacement. Customs officers regularly discover prohibited goods when opening presents: protected species, counterfeit branded goods or unapproved medicines worth several hundred million euros. In the pre- and post-Christmas period, up to ten thousand shipments arrive at the main customs offices every day - and not all of them are particularly pleasing. Postal customers try to avoid paying duties by giving false values for goods. In around 80 percent of all cases, cheating occurs during imports. "30 Minutes Germany" was able to accompany the postal inspectors from customs during the busy Christmas period and look into the gift shipments with them.
