In 1884, the Bremen merchant Adolf Lüderitz founded the first German colony on the territory of the state of Namibia: German South West Africa. The German Empire enriched itself by exploiting the mineral resources there. Since the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, the African republic has been considered freed from its colonial power.
