Naif Hamdan - The Story of Shajar al-Durr Shajar al-Durr was a slave girl of Turkish or Khwarazmian origin, and it was said that she was Armenian. She was bought by al-Salih Najm al-Din Ayyub, before he became sultan, and she accompanied him during his imprisonment in Karak in 1239 with his slave named Rukn al-Din Baybars (not al-Zahir Baybars), who later became sultan in 1260 AD. She gave birth to a son named Khalil, who was given the title of King al-Mansur. After al-Salih was released from prison, she went with him to Egypt and they got married there.
