The castle tower and Honmaru Palace were destroyed, leaving only the stone walls. After that, calls for the castle tower to be rebuilt grew, and donations were received from citizens and all over the country, leading to the long-awaited reconstruction. The castle tower, with five layers and five floors, one basement, and a height of 55.6 meters, is the largest in the world, and a golden shachihoko (a carp with a golden head) is placed on the roof to symbolize the majesty of the Tokugawa clan. Honmaru Palace was completed in 1615 as the residence of the lord of Owari and the domain's government office. It was praised as the greatest masterpiece of modern castle palaces. In 1930 (Showa 5), it was designated as the first national treasure of the castle, along with the castle tower. Fortunately, drawings and records from the Edo period, actual measurements made in the prewar Showa period, and old photographs were preserved, allowing for faithful restoration with unparalleled accuracy. In 2018, the most prestigious "Jorakuden" and "Yudono Shoin" buildings, built for the lodging of Shogun Iemitsu, were completed. Southwest Corner Tower (Mishin Corner Tower) Located in the southwest corner of the Honmaru, it was built around 1612 (Keicho 17). All three corner towers remain as they were when they were first built, and are designated as Important Cultural Properties. Honmaru Omote Ninomon Gate Completed in 1612. Located on the south side of the Honmaru, the wood used for the gateposts and doors is thick, and it is solidly constructed with iron plates nailed to it. The sleeve walls on both sides of the gate are made of earth, and are characterized by holes for firing guns, or gun slits. The Tamon Tower was burned down during the war. There are three gates in the Honmaru, and on the south side and the rear of the Ninomaru side, a double gate-shaped masugata was set up, and a huge horse-shed made of stone walls was placed on the outside of it, making it difficult to invade. The main horse-shed outside the Honmaru Omotemon masugata was particularly huge and powerful, with a tamon-yagura tower surrounding it in addition to the masugata. When the Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium at the former Ninomaru Higashi-Ninomon Gate was built, it was moved to the current site of the Honmaru Higashi-Ninomon Gate. In the late Edo period, Western photography was brought to Japan, and the 14th feudal lord at the time, Tokugawa Yoshikatsu, had a strong interest in cameras and photographed various places including Nagoya Castle. More than 700 glass dry plate photographs taken in 1940-41 before the Nagoya Castle burned down remain. Fumeimon Gate There is a Fumeimon Gate on the north side of the Honmaru on the border with Omimaru, but it was considered a gate that was never opened. Northwest Corner Tower (Inu-i Corner Tower) Located in the northwest corner of Ofukemaru, it was built in 1619. It is the second largest three-story tower in Japan that still exists from the Edo period. A Meiji-era building that remains in the Nogi Warehouse Ofukemaru, it was built as an ammunition storehouse. It was named after Army Major Nogi Maresuke. Many of the wall and ceiling paintings were evacuated to the Nogi Warehouse and other locations in advance, so they were spared from being burned down in air raids. The vast Sannomaru earthworks and dry moat surround the baileys, and five gates are located at the Kabushika Gate, Misono Gate, Honmachi Gate, Higashi Gate, and Shimizu Gate. Each has a stone wall built to form a square. ▼Source Nagoya Castle Official Website https://www.nagoyajo.city.nagoya.jp/ ▼BGM "Flowers Blooming in Heaven and Earth" http://www.hmix.net/music H/MIX GALLERY http://www.hmix.net/ ▼Images Pexels Video https://www.pexels.com/ja-jp/videos/ Photo AC https://www.photo-ac.com/ ▼Recommended related videos [From Nagoya] Relaxed Historical Tourism Channel [Seeing Nagoya in Old Photographs] - From the Meiji, Taisho and early Showa periods (prewar, Nagoya Air Raid, postwar reconstruction) - • [Old Nagoya (Compilation)] From the Meiji, Taisho and early Showa periods (prewar, Nagoya Air Raid, postwar reconstruction)... 2010Network Nagoya Castle Main Tower PR Video • Nagoya Castle Main Tower PR Video Let's Go!
