Discussions around these notions are generally endless, and frequently rely on different meanings of these terms for each of the interlocutors. It is therefore appropriate to examine precisely the history of the meanings of a whole series of words: belief and religion, certainly, but also myth, legend, fable, tale, etc., which are often considered synonyms in common language… However, these terms have regularly changed meaning over time, with even complete inversions, ranging from “word of truth” to “deceptive speech”. Moreover, comparisons from one language to another show that they are not universal, and that they can even be untranslatable. This type of examination allows us to elucidate our representations and to temporarily distance ourselves from our opinions by practicing the “step aside” characteristic of anthropology, thus avoiding the sterility of a dogmatic face-to-face. Scientifically studying the diversity of representations allows us to distance ourselves from our own beliefs and leads us to put into perspective the domineering will of those who cannot tolerate criticism.
