But ATK, Buell, Roko,n and Victory are not as well-known, nor, probably, the oldest American motorcycle brand… which is not Harley, but Indian… 1. Indian Single. (1904) Contrary to popular belief, the first American motorcycle was an Indian, specifically the Single… The brand was founded in 1901 in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA. The name Springfield is iconic for the brand… and we’ll talk about it here. 2. Harley Silent Grey Fellow. (1908) It’s not the first Harley, but it was the first one shaped like a motorcycle rather than a bicycle with an engine. The name is due to the low noise it made… how things have changed! Well, and the grey colour of its bodywork. 3. Indian Scout 101. (1928) Designed by Charles B. Franklin, who had also designed the initial Scout, the 101 had a new chassis with a deformable parallelogram fork front suspension, a longer wheelbase and a lower seat height. 4. Harley Davidson FLH Duo-Glide. (1958) Harleys began to grow, to get fatter and become bikes very suitable for long trips, like this Duo-Glide from '58. Its most important novelty was that the 1.2 litre Big Twin engine was on rubber pads and its rear swing arm had good suspension. 5. Rokon Trail-Breaker. (1960) The history of Rokon is curious in every way, for example, in the fact that its founder was a woman, Orla Larsen from Vermont, who in 1958 decided to manufacture and sell a two-wheel drive motorcycle, designed by Charlie Fenom. 6. ATK 406. (1987) We continue in off road, because ATK was founded by the Austrian engineer, Motocross racer and ISDT gold medalist, Horst Leitner. He went to the USA and in 1985 patented a new traction system for motorcycles that he marketed as a kit. 7. Harley Davidson Fat Boy. (1991) Any “Fat Boy” could have been on this list, but I chose the bike from Terminator 2. In 1991, Arnold Schwarzenegger in the fiction of a cyborg from the future called the T-800. To do this, he climbs onto a Harley Davidson Fat Boy… 8. Buell Lightning XB9S. (2003) Buell Motorcycle was founded in 1983 in Wisconsin. Erik Buell, its founder, was an engineer at Harley-Davidson, but he didn’t like the way things were done there… and decided to create his own brand… very USA style. To start off, he won the AMA championship with the RW750. But in 1998, Harley bought the brand and in 2009 Buell ceased to exist. 9. Victory Vision 8-Ball. (2010) Victory wanted to beat Harley on its own turf, that of the big, heavy, rotund Mega Cruisers… and produced this Vision 8-Ball. It is true that it did not succeed, but it coincided with many experts who say that, if any Victory is collectible, this would be the best. 10. Indian Springfield. (2016) The first bike in this collection was the Indian Single and we already told you that the name Springfield was sacred to the brand. So much so that one of the bikes that can be considered the best of the brand was baptized with this name, Springfield. This bike is very special, starting with its engine, which has a name, like the great engines of history: Thunder Stroke 111… or “Thunder Strike” 111, which is the displacement in inches, in cc it is 1,811. For me this Springfield is more American than Coca Cola, but yes, if you like big bikes, but big, very big, almost 400 kilos and almost 3 meters long… Bike of the day. Without a doubt, for me the bike of the day has to be the Indian Springfield, because… you can have one! Planeta deAgostini has launched a collectible of this bike, in the style of the one we saw of the Ford GT40 and the Bugatti Veyron, but for me it’s even better… Why? Because this kit has a mechanical part that is truly marvellous… and really big! 1:4 scale, almost 62 cm and 40 cm high… it makes you want to get on! The truth is that it has hooked me from the first delivery… And don’t miss the exclusive gifts: A set of three prints, an official mug, a miniature helmet and a gift bag… you’re seeing them… You can find the details in the descriptive text.
