Moor railways have been transporting peat through the moor for over a hundred years. No other means of transport can get through swampy terrain as well as the railway. The pressure is distributed over a large area via rails and sleepers, so that the railway does not sink. This advantage helped the last field railway to survive. The rail network in the moorland areas between Meppen and Hamburg covers several hundred kilometers. A whole series of companies have been mining peat there for 150 years. The Moor Express also runs regularly as a tourist attraction through the Teufelsmoor and past the Worpswede artists' colony. Railway romance visits moor railways that still operate on 600 and 900 mm track widths and transport peat on swampy ground.
