Samuel is Born (1 Samuel 1:1-18) ¹ There was a man of Ramathaim-zophim from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. ² Elkanah had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children. ³ Every year Elkanah went up from his city to worship and to offer sacrifices to the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. And there were in Shiloh the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, priests of the LORD. ⁴ Now when the day came for Elkanah to offer the sacrifice, he gave portions to Peninnah his wife, and to his sons and daughters. ⁵ But to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, even though the LORD had kept her barren. ⁶ And her envious men vexed her greatly, to make her complain because the LORD had kept her barren. ⁷ And so it happened, year after year, whenever she went up to the house of the LORD, he treated her thus; and Peninnah vexed her. Hannah wept and would not eat. ⁸ Then her husband Elkanah said to her, “Hannah, why are you weeping? Why do you not eat, and why are you so grieved? Am I not better than ten sons?” ⁹ And it came to pass, after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, that Hannah arose and went up to the temple. Now Eli the priest was sitting on a chair by the door of the house of the LORD. ¹⁰ Hannah was grieved in spirit, and prayed to the LORD, and wept bitterly. ¹¹ She vowed a vow, saying, “O LORD of hosts, if you will indeed look upon the affliction of your servant and remember me and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a male offspring, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor will come upon his head.”[a] ¹² As she continued praying before the LORD, Eli watched her mouth. ¹³ Now Hannah spoke in her heart, but only moved her lips, and no one heard her. So Eli thought that she was drunk. ¹⁴ So he said to her, “How long will it be before you get rid of your wine? Put away your wine.” ¹⁵ And Hannah said, “Not so, my lord; I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have poured out my soul before the LORD. ¹⁶ Do not think your maidservant a wicked woman; for my great sorrow and anguish have made me speak until now.” ¹⁷ Then Eli said to her, “Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant your petition which you have asked of him.” ¹⁸ And she said, “May your maidservant find favor in your eyes.” Then the woman went her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad.
