About :

In a gypsy camp, there is mourning for the death of the tribe leader, Zigo (Kostas Baladimas). Then they celebrate the election of the new leader, who according to their customs, is none other than Vadar (Tolis Voskopoulos), son of the deceased. A chance meeting of Vadar with the beautiful gypsy Myra (Dora Sizani), sparks the beginning of a fiery love affair. But another gypsy, Karatzai (Anestis Vlahos), also wants Myra. He passionately claims it and succeeds in obtaining it. Vadar, disillusioned and embittered, takes solace in the arms of a white and rich lady, Margarita (Tonia Kaziani), but finds it difficult to live with her. However, the absolute law of the gypsies is death. Both Maira and Karajai are taken there one after the other. "My Brothers, Tramps, Birds" is a very special film in the Greek filmography, which could be characterized as largely unique. It has an important peculiarity: It does not take place in Greece, nor do the heroes have the classic characteristics of the people of the time. The place and time of our story is not precisely defined, having a "fairy tale" feel. Almost all the protagonists belong to a tribe of Gypsies, the "Children of the Sun", who live wandering in the plains and hills of an area that looks like Central Europe or the Balkans, between 1000-1700 AD, but it is not boldly stated . Precisely because place and time have no importance in our story, nor in the messages that the play wants us to receive as viewers. In addition to the high production quality, the costumes, the shooting exclusively outdoors, the make-up (today we might condemn it as "blackface"), the carriages and horses, the timeless music, the performances of Tolis Voskopoulos, Tonia Kazianis, By Dora Sintzani and the amazing Anestis Vlachos, the film is a summary of life and the human condition: The "Children of the Sun" we are all people who live under the Sun and their eternal journey is our life, our own journey, with its good and bad moments, with joy and pain, with carefree and responsibilities, with choices and their consequences. "We are condemned to walk. I walk means I am freer. We are doomed to be freer. Freer to suffer, freer to sing", father Zigo says the night before he dies to his son Vadar, somewhere at the beginning of the film, encapsulating in these words the whole essence of the story and all its symbolic and philosophical background. The absolute freedom of the "Children of the Sun" is also their curse. They are completely free to decide their lives, to make their own choices, but they must live with the consequences of their actions, positive or negative. No one can guarantee them happiness or success, they must constantly struggle against the elements of nature, the prejudices of people and their own passions. Nothing is certain and final, only their ongoing journey, which symbolizes the ongoing journey of our lives. Moreover, in the first scene of the film, the narrator clearly states that it is only one of the many stories that can be told about this race, about their adventures and wanderings. The achronic and atopic element of the film exists precisely to understand its universal message, beyond times, regions, beyond color, religion and every other differentiation. Vadar, Karajai, Myra, Zigo, Gero-Zabur and the rest of the tribe are all of us who live under the Sun, on earth. We wander, we love, we party, we hurt, we win and we lose, we live our passions, the good and the bad elements of our character, we are shaped by our experiences and we are never the same person we were the day before. As in Palamas, the film's "Gypsy" is the powerful symbol of the free soul, leading Man forward to his destiny, leaping over all obstacles and constantly creating the next day with his toil and merit, without look back to the past, only to the lessons learned. Screenplay: Ilias Lymberopoulos Director: Odysseus Kosteletos Actors: Anestis Vlachos Tolis Voskopoulos Lavrentis Dianellos Dora Sitzani Tonia Kazianis Vassos Andronidis George Nezos Stathis Hadzipavlis Frosso Kokkola Kostas Baladimas Christoforos Zikas Christos Natsios George Oikonomou Lakis Gekas Lazos Terzas There are quite a few songs on the film, with lyrics by Ilias Lymberopoulos, with the song of the same name sung by Tolis Voskopoulos leading the way. He is also a performer in: "Sergiani Vgieke o Charontas", "Stala ti Stala", "Petra Varia to Vlemma sou", "Pikra, Gypsy for your sake", "Red Lighthouse" and "Obre Gia". With 312,172 tickets, it came in 8th place among 90 films that season.
