Franz Brunner is one of the pioneers in mulched potato cultivation. In the Waldviertel region of Lower Austria, he cultivates 70 hectares of organic arable land and began implementing the methods of regenerative agriculture for his business early on. His experiences with the use of mulch in potato cultivation are particularly impressive. He began his first experiments in 2006 and now cultivates several hectares of potatoes in this way every year. In this video, Franz reveals what he thinks is important in mulched potato cultivation and what fascinates him so much about this production technique. When mulch is used, up to 100% less soil erosion is recorded, heat stress on plants and consequently also pest pressure (especially Colorado potato beetles) is significantly reduced, moisture is kept in the soil for longer, weeds are suppressed - and yields are increased by up to 20%. ___ Want to delve deeper into potato cultivation with mulch in practice? We have designed a detailed webinar with Stephan Junge, an expert in mulched potato cultivation at the University of Kassel. Full of practical tips, techniques that have been tried and tested over the years and help for the possible challenges.
