Since maize is a C4 plant with low water requirements and only moderate soil demands, it is a common crop in Germany with high dry matter yields per area. Cultivation and processing The maize grown in Central Europe is mainly silage maize. The above-ground parts of the plant are chopped, ensiled and used as animal feed (maize silage) in cattle farming or as a biogas substrate. Conventional silage maize has been bred to be optimized for use as animal feed and has properties such as high yields per hectare, nutrients that are easily accessible in the cattle rumen and good ensilability to ensure long-term storage and thus year-round availability. The high yields per hectare and the existing and proven harvesting technology made maize the most important substrate in biogas plants. The requirements for silage maize for cattle farming and for biogas production (energy maize) differ. While with maize for feed use, digestibility in the digestive tract of the cattle plays a major role in addition to the mass yield, with energy maize the focus is on the methane yield per hectare. By adjusting the choice of variety, seed rate, fertilization, harvest time and technology, silage maize cultivation can be optimized for specific use. Significance In recent years, the cultivation of silage maize has expanded significantly, especially for the production of biogas. According to the Federal Statistical Office, in 2008 maize was grown on 2,087,000 hectares (17.7% of arable land) in Germany. 75% of this was silage maize[2]. In 2007, 239,000 hectares of energy maize were grown. This corresponded to 12.8% of the total German maize cultivation area in 2007. Due to the strong expansion of biogas production, a further strong increase is expected. Distinction between energy maize and feed maize In 2012, maize was grown on around 2.7 million hectares in Germany. This was mainly silage maize, at around 2.15 million hectares. The above-ground parts of the plant are chopped, ensiled and used as feed (maize silage) in cattle farming or as a biogas substrate. The distinction is made primarily on the basis of the use itself. However, there can also be differences in cultivation and choice of variety. In addition, grain maize makes up around a fifth of the German maize cultivation area (2012: 0.529 million hectares). In the form of corn cob mix (CCM) or as grain, it is only used to a small extent in biogas plants. Use Conventional silage maize has been bred to be used as animal feed and meets requirements such as high dry matter yields per unit area, nutrients that are easily accessible in the cattle rumen and good ensilability to ensure long-term storage and thus year-round availability. The high yields per hectare and the existing and proven harvesting technology, as well as the good preservation (ensiling) make maize the main substrate in biogas plants. In principle, silage maize is always suitable for use in biogas plants. If the decision about the use of the harvested crop is made during cultivation, the production of energy maize can potentially be optimized by choosing the variety.
