The podcast “Books” continues the cycle of Mtatsminda residents under the rubric “Georgian”. Today we will talk about one of the greatest residents of Mtatsminda, the star of Georgian science, literacy, philosophy, logic, rhetoric and poetics, patriotic enlightenment and republicanism, Solomon Dodashvili. He is the first in our history to receive a higher education despite his non-aristocratic origin (his father, Ioane Dodashvili, was a mining peasant who became a priest after receiving theological education). Solomon graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy of St. Petersburg University in 1827. In 1828, he received a Master’s degree in Philosophy from the same university. In 1828–1832, he was the editor-in-chief of the weekly supplement of the first Georgian newspaper “Tfilisi Udgestani”. He was the teacher and spiritual father of Nikoloz Baratashvili and Dimitri Kipiani, an active member of the national liberation movement, for which he was arrested in 1832. He died in Vyatka prison in 1836. In 1994, he was transferred from Vyatka to Georgia, to the Mtatsminda Pantheon in Tbilisi.
