After stepping down from the presidency, and being succeeded by President BJ Habibie, HM Soeharto, or familiarly called Pak Harto, spent more days with his extended family on Jalan Cendana Jakarta. After Soeharto stepped down, the ridicule and insults intensified. Various elements of society demanded an investigation and trial of Pak Harto's actions during his 32-year term as president. After 9 years of struggling with his illness, Pak Harto passed away on January 27, 2008 at 13.10 WIB, at the Pertamina Central Hospital, South Jakarta. The body of the New Order leader was then laid out at the Cendana funeral home.
