Winter wonderland for everyone who wants to enjoy their free time in snowy forests and mountains: the Scandinavian mountains in ice and snow. A long mountain range stretches over 1,700 kilometers between Norway and Sweden. A look behind the scenes of the season preparation in central Sweden around Östersund. You can find this and other documentaries in the ARD Mediathek: https://www.ardmediathek.de/dokus For the three-and-a-half-year-old German Shepherd Peace, it will be his first season in action. He has just passed his most important test: searching for people in impassable terrain. At his side: an experienced mountain rescuer, Markus Fröberg. The family man has been working as a specialist in the search for missing people in the Swedish region of Jämtland Härjedalen for eight years. The forests around Sweden's fifth largest lake, Storsjön near Östersund, are just as much a part of their area of operation as the large ski resorts of Åre and Vemdalen, which attract thousands of snow tourists every year. The baby mountains near Östersund and Wången, as the Swedes affectionately call the rounded elevations in the more southern regions, stretch along the border with their high plateaus to the north, where they become sharp and rugged, icy slopes 2,000 meters high around Abisko. Around 16 hours of darkness a day, temperatures well below zero, kilometers of impassable terrain; especially at the start of the season, the Swedish winter landscapes require special experience from tourists compared to the Alps, but above all from the rescue workers in an emergency. Places of longing on nice days, but also nasty traps when the weather changes. Around 400 mountain rescuers are on standby in Sweden to ensure the safety of guests. The biggest challenge in winter: the long nights, snowstorms and unpredictable temperatures and precipitation. For the mostly volunteer rescue workers, this means training at the highest level. This year the first snow came early in the season. The ski areas open the first slopes weeks before the planned start. The tension of the emergency services is clearly noticeable, but also the pressure in the ski areas to prepare everything as quickly as possible, but safely, for the winter sports enthusiasts.
