At the regional assembly of the South Tyrolean Farmers' Association in 2024, three mountain farming families were awarded the Mountain Farmers' Prize. They also include the Telser family from the Kartatschhof in Matsch (municipality of Mals). Siegfried and Ramona Telser manage the Kartatschhof (119 difficulty points) in Matsch in the municipality of Mals at 1,350 m above sea level. The main source of income on the farm is dairy farming. In 2015, Siegfried Telser converted the farm with its 25 animals to organic production. Other economic mainstays are farm holidays with two holiday apartments and direct marketing. In recent years, the family has invested a lot in the farm in order to be able to manage it in a modern way. Meadows were pitted and leveled, a photovoltaic system was installed and a new open-air playpen was built. Managing the farm is a challenge. The five hectares of meadows and just as many leased areas are steep and very fragmented. From June to October, the family is almost constantly mowing. In addition to a modern machine park, volunteers from the voluntary work association help out on the farm. Animal welfare is a major concern for Siegfried and Ramona Telser and their daughters Milena and Mira. In summer and autumn, some of the animals are on the mountain pasture or on the pasture, the rest are in the open-air pen. The bull calves are fattened on the farm and then sold to customers in the surrounding area. In summer, the milk from the animals on the communal mountain pasture is processed into organic alpine cheese in the village dairy and sold directly by the Telser family along with other products from the farm.
