Located astride the provinces of L'Aquila and Teramo, it falls within the territories of the municipalities of Isola del Gran Sasso, Santo Stefano di Sessanio, Castelvecchio Calvisio, Carapelle Calvisio and Calascio. Its characteristic is its geomorphological duality with respect to Monte Camicia: the L'Aquila side that looks towards Campo Imperatore is rocky and highly jagged (which makes it a highly suggestive side), while the opposite Teramo side is almost grassy and less rugged although with a greater difference in height and equally steep. Slow and incessant erosion phenomena due to the spring melting of snow, rain and the extremely friable type of rock have produced over time a vast alluvial scree (debris fan) on the L'Aquila side up to the base of the Campo Imperatore plateau known as Ghiaione del Prena. Monte Infornace is also part of the Prena group, on whose slopes are located the Nevaio di Fonte Rionne and the so-called Torri di Casanova. There are various hiking and mountaineering routes of varying difficulty that lead to the summit (including the Via dei Laghetti). From the top the view extends on one side over the entire province of Teramo and the Adriatic Sea in the distance, on the other over Campo Imperatore. The crest is part of the so-called Sentiero del Centenario.
