Campo Felice is a karst plateau of the Abruzzo Apennines, located in Abruzzo, in the province of L'Aquila, between the territories of the municipalities of Lucoli and Rocca di Cambio, in the Velino-Sirente chain and partly within the Sirente-Velino Regional Natural Park: home to important sports facilities, it is very popular during the winter period by winter sports enthusiasts from Central Italy due to the presence of the ski resort of the same name and its easy accessibility (113 km from Rome). The area, included within the central ridge of the Abruzzo Apennines, is nestled between the mountain massif of Monte Velino, of which it represents the eastern gateway, the mountain group of Monte Orsello-Monte Puzzillo, that of Monte Ocre-Monte Cagno and the Montagne della Duchessa, surrounded to the south-west by the Monti di Campo Felice: access to the Velino massif is from the central part of the plateau, proceeding west and climbing towards Vena Stellante, the Fossa del Puzzillo, the Rifugio Vincenzo Sebastiani and the Colle dell'Orso. The plateau, of karst-alluvial origin, extends in maximum dimensions for 10 km in length and 5 km in width and is located at an average altitude of just over 1500 m above sea level. It has the shape of a basin into which the slopes of the surrounding mountains slope down, all close to or above 2000 m (Monti di Campo Felice); among them stand out Monte Orsello (2043 m), Monte Puzzillo (2174 m), Monte Cefalone (2145 m), the crest of Serralunga, Cisterna, Colle del Nibbio, Punta dell'Azzocchio, Cimata di Pezza, Cimata del Puzzillo and finally Monte Rotondo (2064 m), on whose north-western slopes the ski resort is located, and from whose summit on clear days you can admire the highest surrounding peaks, from Gran Sasso to Sirente, from Velino to Maiella, Terminillo and the Montagne della Duchessa (beyond this mountain ridge are the Rocche plateau and the Piani di Pezza). The plain is divided into two parts separated approximately by the state road 696 of the Sirente-Velino Regional Park which crosses it: the south-eastern part where the ski resort is located and the north-western part (Camardosa); approximately 70% of the entire plain falls within the territory of the municipality of Lucoli while the remaining 30%, where the ski resort is located, falls within the territory of the municipality of Rocca di Cambio and the Sirente-Velino Regional Natural Park; the mountain slopes exposed to the east and north-east of the basin are covered with beech forests up to 1850 m above sea level and with moraine remains on the lower slopes exposed to the north, testifying to the presence of ancient glaciers in past ice ages[1], while the plain and the slopes exposed to the west and south are almost completely devoid of tall vegetation.
