I remember we were in one of our classes, preparing for our exams. We had a religious studies class, where they talked about Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism. And during the class they showed us literally one slide about Islam, just to check it off. And so, you write down from the screen: so, Islam is an Abrahamic religion, strictly monotheistic; similar to Christianity; founded by the prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. … Mecca … yeah, I get it. That’s such a general information. I came home and started googling Islam, and I said to myself, “Hmm, why not? I like to learn new things.” So, I started studying Islamic history, culture, what is that black square building? Oh, that’s the Kaaba. Okay. What is Mecca? What is Medina? What are those huge mosques? They’re just radiant. And I studied the history of Islam, everything that had to do with Islam; I still do that. Eventually, I finished school. And one of my first jobs was working in a call centre in Cardiff. It was a very multicultural place. I remember my first day, in a study group. We went into a study room. There were a lot of people there. And in the corner of the room, I saw my sister wearing a niqab. Then, as we were going through the study, I noticed that she was kind of on her own, not many people were talking to her. No one was talking to her. So I wanted to socialise her somehow. I asked her to sit next to me on the phone. In our spare time, we talked a lot about Islam. I would ask her, “What does THIS mean? What does that mean? Tell me more about the Prophet Muhammad. Tell me more about Islam.” And she would say, “Tell me about British culture. Why do you celebrate Christmas? What is Halloween? Where did this holiday come from?” and all that kind of stuff. This went on for a while. One day she came to me and said, “I see that you are very interested in learning about Islam. If I bring you the Quran, will you read it?” I said, “Yes, of course I will!” The next day she brought me the Quran. I came home and started reading it. I remember reading the Quran and being like, “Hmm, I get it. This makes sense. Oh, I believe in this too.” And I read and read it; and each time, I began to love the Quran more and more. Some kind of inner love and attraction to the Quran awakened in me. I continued reading it, every day, page after page. You could say that this book answered many of my questions. Everything in it made sense and made sense. To be honest, I did not expect this to happen to me. A lot of things in the Quran made sense to me, I liked it; it seemed like Islam was calling for a good, productive way of life. I began to think, “Maybe this is the truth I am looking for?” However, life as a young man took its toll. Eventually, I left that job. Well, you know what a young 20-year-old guy does. I got a girlfriend, I got another job. Life went on as usual; and that Quran just sat on the shelf for a long time. Eventually, that relationship ended. One day, I was cleaning my room and came across the Quran on the top shelf. And I started reading it again, just like before. Everything was logical and clear to me again. I felt some kind of pleasant and natural attraction when reading the Quran. Then I started asking my Muslim friends questions about Islam, more and more. And one day they told me, “You need to go to the mosque and talk to the imam.” I decided to go to the mosque. I remember being terribly scared.
