The Certosa di Bologna, one of the oldest monumental cemeteries in Italy, houses the richest collection of Italian neoclassical art. Covering an area of thirty hectares, the halls, galleries and cloisters of the Certosa cemetery house at least 6,000 artefacts of historical and artistic interest, the work of over 200 artists. It was established in 1801 as the city's only cemetery after the conquest of Bologna by Napoleon's troops and the suppression of the Certosa di San Girolamo di Casara. The monumental part of the cemetery occupies the ancient buildings of the monastery and includes the church of San Girolamo, with its precious seventeenth-century paintings. Since the 1830s, the cemetery has been enriched with new spaces and cloisters, presenting itself as a true open-air museum, in which valuable funerary monuments are preserved. The cemetery was a stop on the eighteenth-century Grand Tour and a destination for nineteenth-century international tourism. Source Wikipedia: https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cimiter...
