(video report by giancarlo guidetti) - Monsignor Edoardo Aldo Cerrato read in the Cathedral the message that the new Bishop, Monsignor Daniele Salera, addresses to the Diocese, a message that we report in full: “Dear all, with great joy I have welcomed the appointment of the Holy Father Francis as Bishop of Ivrea; from now on I await with deep consolation the day of my entry into the Diocese. I am a son of the beloved Diocese of Rome, raised in its territory; from the Church that is in Rome I have received the gift of the protection of the Sacraments and of fraternal life. I owe much to its Pastors and, together, to its flock. Being a priest and then Bishop of this city has taught me to broaden the natural boundaries of belonging, observing the many ways of being Church that live the common baptismal vocation in obedience to the magisterium of the Holy Father and listening to the sensus fidei fidelium. All this helps me not to feel, from now on, any distance from the Church of Ivrea that I want to serve as the new Bishop. We will be pilgrims together in the propitious time of the Jubilee Year, wanting to live it not so much as an event, even if solemn, but rather as a community journey, which allows all of us to be confirmed in the primacy of God on Earth, on goods, on our lives and vocations. We will draw together from the Mercy of the Father who through the Son gives us the Spirit beyond all our human expectations: "Come to Him, the living stone rejected by men, but chosen and precious in the sight of God, you too, like living stones, are being used for the construction of a spiritual house, for a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God, through Jesus Christ (!Pt 2, 4-5). Together we will follow the footsteps of all those witnesses who understood in their flesh how the faith received could not be understood exclusively as a good for themselves, but rather as a light given to “shine those who sit in darkness and at the hour of death” (Lk 1:7-9). In n. 42 of the Apostolic Exhortation “Evangelii Gaudium”, Pope Francis reminds us that “We will never be able to make the teachings of the Church something easily understandable and happily appreciated by everyone. Faith always presents an aspect of the Cross, some obscurity that does not take away the firmness of its adherence. There are things that are understood and appreciated only on the basis of this adherence which is the sister of love, beyond the clarity with which one can grasp its reasons and arguments. For this reason it is necessary to remember that every teaching of the Doctrine must be situated in the evangelizing attitude that awakens the adherence of the heart with closeness, love and testimony”. I have long experienced the profound realism of these words and I am convinced that this is the most current and fruitful way of mission according to the style of proximity. In a few days it will be Christmas and I am writing to you on my return from a training camp for young leaders of AGESCI. Among them was a Leader from Ivrea who could not have known of my appointment. Looking at you I thought of all the young people of our Diocese, of the future of our Church, but also of those among them who will need the "true Light, which enlightens every man" (Jn. 1:9): how their eyes light up when it is announced to them - also with the song that has accompanied us in these days - that the Lord is near, takes on our human nature and in Him everything is possible: "because we have heard His words, because we have seen lives change, because we have seen love win, yes, we have seen love win". I thank in advance my brother Bishop Edoardo Aldo Cerrato who I know will be close to me in this delicate handover, I thank him for what he has sown among you and because I know he is giving me a “beautiful bride” rich in history and faith. I greet the most eminent Cardinals Bertone, Bertello and Miglio and the Bishops Pireto, Farinella and Debernardi, sons of this land, asking them to pray for me. I entrust myself to the intercession of the Assumption and of San Savino, Patron of the Diocese. To all of you, dearest brothers and sisters, I send my blessing and I assure you of my prayers, waiting to see you soon and to walk together".
