There are three monasteries located in southern Greece, built between the 10th and 12th centuries, and built in a similar architectural style: the Monastery of Hosios Loukas, the Monastery of Daphni, and the Monastery of Neamoni on the island of Chios. Known for their splendid mosaics and considered to be a good example of the second golden age of Byzantine art, the three monasteries were inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1990. The Monastery of Hosios Loukas, the earliest of these, was built in the late 10th century. Dedicated to St Hosios Lukas (896-953), the monastery is built in typical Byzantine style. The building is two-storey, and the many windows allow light to shine through, enhancing the beauty of the mosaics and marble sculptures. It was damaged by an earthquake in the 16th century, but was excavated and restored in the 20th century.
