Mona Vetsch has travelled widely. Now she is changing sides and looking after backpackers from all over the world. In Interlaken, Mona experiences what goes on behind the scenes of a backpacker hostel. Backpackers want cheap and comfortable accommodation. That's why chambermaid Mona is sweating profusely. In the Balmers Hostel, the washing machine runs non-stop. Mountains of laundry are piling up. Governess Rosalie keeps an overview and at the same time introduces Mona to the art of making rooms. More than 150 beds and more have to be made every day. It's a tough job that is mainly done by foreign women. Like Isabella from Rome, who could barely feed her two daughters and so knocked on the door of Balmers two years ago with a suitcase in her hand. While they're toiling away backstage, the backpackers are looking for an adrenaline rush. Paragliding, river rafting and in the evening, the party is on. Many of the young travellers are abroad for the first time and are clumsy. They besiege the reception with the same old questions, where Mona also makes herself useful. Balmers is considered to be the oldest backpacker hostel in Switzerland. Owner Erich Balmer brought his business model with him from the USA. Even today, 74-year-old Balmer celebrates the American national holiday with his guests and lots of pomp. "The show must go on," even if Erich Balmer does not see the future of Swiss tourism as rosy.
