There are countless stories of mistakes and spontaneous moments that happen on film sets. Sometimes these unexpected shots give the entire scene a sense of authenticity and originality. And if they make it into the final cut, they definitely improve the film. In this video, you will learn about some of these unplanned moments. The 1976 boxing drama Rocky remains popular four decades after it hit theaters and has grown into a massive billion-dollar franchise. However, like its protagonist, the film was considered of dubious artistic potential at the time of its release. The budget of the first film was negligible compared to other projects in the industry, at just over $1 million. It recouped its costs 225 times over, but the low-budget production of the first installment is still visible in some scenes. Sylvester Stallone wrote the script in just three and a half days, and the film was shot in four weeks. He believed the film would show how “less-known people… can create something truly brilliant,” no matter the circumstances surrounding them. The humble “Italian Stallion” and the filmmaker weren’t the only “unknowns” who made Rocky a huge hit. The small budget meant there wasn’t always enough money to pay extras, camera operators, or even get permission to film. So when the crew filmed the famous scene in which Rocky runs through an Italian market, they did it “guerrilla style” from the back of a van. Because of this approach, the kiosk owners didn’t even know a movie was being filmed. One of them even tossed Stallone an orange, which he caught safely, a lucky unplanned moment that set the tone for the film and made us root for the hero even more.
