The Surah begins with praise to Allah the Most High for sending down the Quran, which contains warning, exhortation and good news. This Surah tells the story of the people (Ashab al-Kahf) who were resurrected after they had fallen asleep and stayed in a cave for more than three hundred years (a plot similar to the Seven Youths of Ephesus in Christianity). These people were believers who fled from a ruler who persecuted them for their faith and lay in a cave all this time. Then they were resurrected, which is a sign confirming the power of Allah in resurrection after death. The Surah then tells about Musa and the God-fearing slave of Allah, to whom Allah granted knowledge. The Surah mentions Dhul-Qarnayn, who came to the extreme east and erected a barrier there. “Praise be to Allah, Who has sent down the Book to His servant and has not allowed anything to be false in it, but has made it sound, that it may warn against a severe punishment from Him, and give good news to those who believe, who do righteous deeds, that they will have a good reward wherein they will abide forever, and that He may warn those who say, ‘Allah has taken a son’. Neither they nor their fathers have knowledge of it. Grievous are the words that come out of their mouths. They utter nothing but lies. Will you destroy yourself in grief over their footsteps if they disbelieve in this narration? Ayah.svg Verily, We have made everything on the earth as an adornment for it, that We may test people and see whose deeds are best. Verily, We will reduce everything on the earth to nothing but dust.
