On 6 April 1572, the people of Vlissingen revolted against the Spanish occupiers during the Eighty Years' War. On Easter morning, the population became angry because more troops would be stationed in the city. The mercenaries had months of outstanding pay and also had to be fed, or would the city just cough up for it. The cup was full and the population single-handedly drove the Spaniards out of the city, making Vlissingen the first city in the Netherlands to free itself from Spanish oppression. In this mini-documentary, presenter Peter Sijnke talks to experts Peter van Druenen, Tobias van Gent and Ad Tramper about this historic event. The stories come to life, we visit the locations and see what remains of this important period for Vlissingen. A film by Klaas van de Ketterij, made for the Zeeuwse Documentaire Stichting. Sponsored by the Municipality of Vlissingen, Moerman Stichting and Lionsclub Vlissingen.
