It is also called the "eighth wonder of the world" - a dream made of precious amber. You can admire it in the Catherine Palace near St. Petersburg in Russia: the Amber Room. But the magnificent room is a reconstruction. The original, a Russian-German masterpiece that was a symbol of mutual solidarity for centuries, has disappeared and has been haunting hordes of treasure hunters for decades. Where is the treasure of the millennium? In 1701, the room was commissioned and created by the Hohenzollern regent Frederick III. In 1713, it was inherited by Frederick William I, who was unfamiliar with such luxury. The "Soldier King" gave the treasure to the art-loving Tsar Peter the Great, thereby securing the support of the Russian superpower. Catherine the Great, the Tsarina from Germany, later added valuable Florentine mosaics to the room. When the Wehrmacht invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, the Amber Room fell into German hands. It was last seen at the end of the war in 1945 when the Red Army captured Königsberg in East Prussia. Some people suspect that the Amber Room was packed in crates in one of the underground passageways of Königsberg Castle so that it could survive the war unscathed and not fall into Russian hands. But what happened to the crates? Did they burn in the fighting for Königsberg? Were they hidden or buried by the Wehrmacht? In any case, the room was never found in Königsberg. This strengthens the opinion of those who suspect it is somewhere else.
