"Yama-chan's Western Goods Heaven" has introduced good old Showa era clothing stores. This time, we will change things up and visit a famous military clothing store in Ueno. When you think of "military" in "Ueno," you think of Ameyoko, right? If you thought so, you're wrong! In Higashi-Ueno, a deep spot lined with Korean restaurants and food stores, there is a very long-established military shop called "Matsuzaki Shoten" that is known only to those in the know! However, this store is known in the industry as a difficult store to interview. It is especially strict when it comes to video media, and the world is like "YouTuber? Go away yesterday." In fact, after several failed attempts, I finally managed to interview them. In a sense, this is a very valuable video, so don't miss it! "Matsuzaki Shoten" is a charming store with the so-called "signboard architecture" that was often seen in the downtown area of Tokyo in the past. It was founded in Fukagawa in 1937, and moved to Higashi-Ueno in 1947 after being damaged by war. The retro interior of the shop still retains the atmosphere of those days, with a raised area at the back of the dirt floor packed with products, where the second-generation owner, Matsuzaki Kazuo, is working in front of a brazier! So cool! Now, what is it about this shop that has captivated enthusiasts? As the sign says, "Shokansho Harai Sagehin" (official goods sold by various government ministries), it is a registered dealer that handles goods sold by Japanese government offices, beginning with the former Japanese military, and in recent years, the US military. In that respect, Matsuzaki emphasizes that "our industry is different" from that in Ameyoko. In recent years, due to changes in the system of goods sold, there are no more goods from the US military, but with the exception of a few, the products sold here are no replicas! They are almost all genuine! There aren't many stores like this even overseas these days! So Matsuzaki Shoten boasts one of the deepest product lineups in the world. The store carries the M-1951 parka, known as the mod parka, the M-65 field jacket, which is becoming scarce these days, the cold weather flight jacket N-3B, and other US military staples, as well as the recent Gore-Tex parka, thigh-length pants, socks, gloves, overalls, etc. When it comes to US military items, they are second to none, from clothing to accessories! They also have a wide selection of Japanese items that are hard to find at other military shops. They have a large selection of rare items, starting with the uniforms of the former Japanese military, leather jackets from the traffic police, uniforms from the Metropolitan Police Department, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, and many other unseen items. Many of the items are quite unique, but they are reasonably priced, and the cargo pants look like they could be incorporated into an American casual style. The store owner, Kazuo Matsuzaki, says in a few words, "The military uses good products in every country. Especially the items made of pure wool and pure cotton before synthetic fibers became mainstream are good." And when he says, "Well, I don't dislike military things," you can see his strong pride and love. At first glance, he looks a little scary, but he's actually a kind person, so why not try talking to him with courage and courtesy? What I chose this time at Matsuzaki Shoten was a so-called snow parka. It is a coat for hiding in the snow, and was made in 1948. It features a fresh white color and a big silhouette to wear over a coat, and is a masterpiece that has been sampled many times by fashion brands. Isn't the price of 11,000 yen only possible from a wholesaler? By the way, Ogiyama-senpai bought the N-3B, which is famous as the masterpiece of the US Air Force. Most replicas are reproductions of the early models made of 100% nylon, so a cotton-nylon blend is a connoisseur's choice. I was about to leave the store with a happy face, thinking that I had made a good purchase, when photographer Shojima-san, who is actually a heavy user of this store, advised me, "You should definitely get a receipt." I wondered what it was, and then I found this very cool photo. I'm going to frame it and keep it! So, from the location to the store's appearance, the product lineup, the owner's personality, and even the receipt, everything about Matsuzaki Shoten is entertaining. I hope you all enjoy your shopping experience!
