Javier Milei was elected president of Argentina in December 2023, describing himself as a libertarian and anarcho-capitalist and promising “shock therapy” for the Argentine economy and a “chainsaw” to cut public spending. After just one year in office, he has indeed reduced Argentina’s deficit and controlled inflation, but at a high cost to the population: poverty has reached its highest level in the last 20 years. Milei has also had friction with Lula.
