The Rocca di Stellata, also known as Rocca Possente, is a river defense structure located in Stellata, a hamlet of Bondeno, in the province of Ferrara. Located on the southern bank of the Po River, it was connected, by a 600-meter long chain, to the Rocca Benedetta di Ficarolo (destroyed by the fury of the river in 1670) on the other river bank: a chain stretched between the two fortresses served as a river barrier for defensive reasons or to impose customs duties on merchant ships. In 1433 the Marquis of Ferrara Niccolò III d'Este reinforced the structure, which was burned by the Venetians in 1510 and immediately rebuilt. Duke Alfonso II d'Este ordered its demolition in 1587. With the end of the Este family, the building passed to the Papal States. The current building was erected by Pope Urban VIII in 1629. Since 1995 it has been a UNESCO protected property within the World Heritage Site of Ferrara, a Renaissance city and its Po Delta. Source Wikipedia: https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocca_d...
