The conflict that first demonstrated that air supremacy would depend on this new technology was the Korean War. When the People's Army was expelled from the South, the Soviet Union became its main air support. In the fall of 1950, Stalin's government dispatched its Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15s to protect Chinese forces crossing the Yalu River. The United States Air Force countered with North American F-86 Sabres. In the sector known since then as "MiG Alley," a battle was fought at altitudes close to 15,000 meters.
