Saturday 22 July, excursion in a natural environment SURREAL! Starting from the hamlet of Saint Jacques, in the municipality of Ayas (AO), we head towards the Rifugio Guide della Val d'Ayas, at an altitude of 3,420 m, right at the foot of the Verra glacier. Our destination is the starting point for the ascents to the famous peaks of Polluce, Castore and Roccia Nera. Before reaching the Rifugio Guide d'Ayas at Lambronecca, we make a short stop at the beautiful Lago Blu, which, despite its name, actually has a beautiful emerald green color. We then continue, via a steep and tiring path, to the Rifugio Ottorino Mezzalama, at an altitude of 3,036 m. After a stop to drink a hot tea, we set off again, heading for the final destination. The route from the Mezzalama Refuge to the Guide d'Ayas Refuge winds first along a rather steep path, then continues on scree, until reaching the last stretch, equipped with ropes and wooden bridges. We are at the foot of the majestic Verra Glacier, now suffering, but still extremely suggestive! The route, with its 1,700 m total of positive difference in altitude, distributed over about twenty km there and back, requires good training and accustomed to high-altitude mountains. If desired, it is possible to shorten the route and cover part of the difference in altitude by using the JEEP service from Saint Jacques to Pian di Verra Superiore (2,380 m). The itinerary is Hiking/Mountaineering, so a sure step and a minimum of familiarity with exposure are recommended.
