Started on September 2 in Avignon before the criminal court of Vaucluse, the trial of the Mazan rapes is a shock. Why such an echo? What does it tell us about the acceptance of rape in our society, and also about the lack of knowledge that we have of the definition of what rape is? What does it reveal about the judicial system? Will this trial be able to drive a wedge into the "rape culture" that continues to permeate society and the courts? How can we better judge cases of sexist and sexual violence and better care for victims? Like the major rape trials that have marked history, will the Mazan trial, still ongoing, be an opportunity for legislative changes by introducing the notion of consent into the definition of rape?
