Sermon from 20/10/2024 preached by Maciej Bishop OP Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time 1st reading (Is 53:10-11) The price of salvation A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah It pleased the Lord to crush his Servant with suffering. If he makes his life an offering for sins, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will be accomplished through him. After the anguish of his soul he will see the light and be satisfied. My righteous Servant will justify many, and he himself will bear their iniquities. 2nd reading (Heb 4:14-16) Let us draw near to Christ with confidence A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews Since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way just as we are—except in sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Gospel (Mark 10:35-45) Leadership is the ministry of the Word of the Gospel according to Saint Mark James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus and said, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask you.” He said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” They said to him, “Grant us, that we may sit, one at your right and the other at your left, in your glory.” Jesus answered them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to receive the baptism with which I am baptized?” They said to him, “We can.” But Jesus said to them, "The cup that I am to drink, you will drink; and the baptism that I am to receive, you will receive. But it is not up to me to give a place at my right hand or at my left, but to those for whom it has been prepared it will be given." When the ten who remained heard this, they began to be indignant at James and John. Jesus called them to him and said to them, "You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. It will not be so among you. But whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
