They are those sequences of notes, that is, little turns, that we hear in several songs. Mainly singers who sing blues and gospel songs. Pentatonic scales are used a lot. Some people confuse appoggiatura with melisma. Appoggiatura is 3 notes. It is important to say here that the singer who wants to do melismas has to sing the notes that are within the musical scale, which is why learning musical scales and harmony are extremely important. Why? Because if the singer does a melisma and one or more notes are not within the musical scale, it will sound strange. It is as if you were singing out of tune. There are many singers who do these melismas by intuition. They learn a sequence of notes, apply it to the music and if the melisma fits, great. You will notice for yourself when the notes of the melisma do not fit the music. But, I will give you 3 tips to start practicing melismas. First tip: YOU NEED TO OBTAIN VOCAL AGILITY, because for melismas to be beautiful, the notes must be executed quickly and you need to have vocal agility. If you play an instrument and know how to do musical scales, you should practice vocalizations quickly. Second tip: Keep your jaw relaxed and move it to help better define the notes. Because beautiful melisma is when you hear and identify the notes. Third tip: Practice all the vowels.
