Doctor of Letters, engineer at the CNRS, student of Marc Bloch and Lucien Febvre, the medievalist Marguerite Gonon was from the Annales school, for whom history is that of the common people and ordinary days. Her work as a historian is set in the province of her native Forez. In this film she takes us into the magical night of the Benedictine monasteries, in the footsteps of those who cleared the land, dug the ponds, built the Romanesque chapels. She gives us a wealth of information on daily life, customs, social relations, discoveries that call into question the simplistic vision we had of medieval society. When she descends to the depths of the Romanesque crypts, her knowledge of history fades before the emotion aroused in her by the memory of this time when the sacred kept people in the community.
