Many of them, born in a medieval context, are still used today, although their origin is often unknown. Among these expressions, some come directly from the world of work, where artisans, merchants and even knights have left their linguistic mark. These turns of phrase tell a story, that of a changing society, where trades and travel were at the heart of economic and social life. “To have a pied-à-terre” The expression “to have a pied-à-terre” is commonly used today to refer to a second home or temporary accommodation, often in the city. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, when knights, traveling merchants or traveling artisans needed a modest place to stop during their travels. At the time, the roads were long and perilous, and inns or hospices were often the only places of accommodation available. These places, although basic, allowed these travelers to set foot, literally, in a space where they could rest before setting off again.
