An academic year is made up of 2 quadrimesters. After passing the entrance exam in Medicine, you join the 1st quadrimester. The 2nd term (Q2) is devoted to the acquisition of basic sciences, preclinical concepts with biomedical courses (biochemistry, histology, anatomy, physiology) as well as cross-disciplinary courses (health and society) reinforced by seminars on the integration of subjects in groups. Depending on the university, you can do a nursing internship at the end of this year. From term 3 to term 5, the studies focus on the normal human being and on the general principles of diseases, on preclinical skills. At the end of this year, you do observation internships to acclimatize yourself to the hospital environment. Terms 6 to 12 focus on diseases (you do theoretical teaching, hospital internships, practical work and seminars from Q6). From term 10, the training focuses on the patient (mandatory internships and internships chosen with a view to the specialty). A very important notion to know is that your training is financed by the state, and you must not have less than 60 credits in 3 years. In reality, this means that you cannot repeat the same year twice. If this is the case, the Belgian State considers that you are not performing well and stops financing your studies. You will have to change careers. Admission to the third cycle (or specialized master's degree) is quite special. If you studied medicine in Belgium, 3 grades will be taken into account when choosing your specialty: There are your grades from the 4th, 5th and 6th years, Your internship grades and especially your grades in the internships of the specialty that interest you. The grades of the cardiology internship will be more important than those of surgery if you apply in cardiology for example. The grade you obtain in the specialization competition organized by the faculty to which you are applying.
