The Medes were a group of Indo-Iranian speaking people from Central Asia who migrated westward and probably entered northern Iran at the end of the second millennium BC. They eventually settled in the highlands of Zagros, and founded the Median Empire in the late 7th century BC. Since no written evidence of Central Asian immigrant groups has been found in the Late Bronze Age, it is not known what name or names these people used to introduce themselves. "Med" is a word in the ancient Persian language that was used in Greek writings to refer to the people from Achaemenid Iran in the form of Medes (Medes = Μηδoi, meaning "the Medes") from the fifth century BC onwards. But the Medes were originally a group of tribes living in the north of the Zagros, and most likely not related to the political authority as they were related through a common language and culture. In fact, the Median tribes were in constant conflict with each other until the national unification in the 8th century BC, and the main reason for their union was to counter the successive attacks of the Assyrians from the east and the Urartu and Scythian armies from the north. =========================== I am Hasti M, a tourism student.
