In the spring of 1945, the concentration camps in Vienna and eastern Austria were evacuated before the advancing Soviet troops. Thousands of concentration camp prisoners and thousands of Jews from Hungary, who had been involved in the construction of the south-eastern wall, were sent on death marches towards the Mauthausen concentration camp. Not only concentration camp henchmen were involved in their cruel murder, but also, for the first time, the civilian population. The film from the series "Mauthausen on the doorstep" follows the traces of these events with the help of contemporary witnesses and newly discovered image documents.
