Massimo Cacciari - Conatus and Desiderium Desiderare 2024 - XIX ed. Lograto (BS) In this lectio magistralis Massimo Cacciari investigates the close relationship, but also the differences, that exist between Conatus and Desiderium. If on the one hand in his Ethics Spinoza argues that: «the Effort (Conatus) with which each thing tries to persevere in its being is nothing other than the essence of the thing itself» (Proposition VII) on the other hand he argues that the Mind «is conscious of its own effort» (Proposition IX). The following stumbling block is of great importance, because on the one hand it supports the superimposition of the concepts of Will, Appetite, Desire, and on the other it arrives on this basis to determine «the very essence of man» exactly like any other thing or living being, except to translate that Appetite into Will, when we refer to the mind alone, or into Desire (Cupiditas) as men are aware of their Appetite: «Desire is Appetite united with self-consciousness».
