Xuan Son Hill is a low hill only a few dozen meters high in An Huu commune, Hoai An, Binh Dinh. Here, the 1st US Cavalry Division built a field artillery base with 2 battalions of US soldiers stationed to control the border area between the plains and the mountains. In December 1966, the 22nd Regiment of the 3rd Division of the Liberation Army suddenly attacked Xuan Son Hill. After reaching the top of the hill, only a few minutes later, the US army counterattacked with fierce artillery attacks, causing heavy casualties to the Liberation Army. At the end of the battle, the US soldiers gathered the bodies of the soldiers and buried them in mass graves at the foot of the hill. Several decades later, some of those graves were found.
