What is the title or percentage by mass and how do you calculate it? Saline solution is a solution widely used to clean our nostrils and also to clean and moisturize our eyes. In addition, saline solution is used to dilute vaccines, such as the vaccine against the Covid-19 virus. In pharmacies, we can find saline solution and on its labels we read: Saline solution or sodium chloride solution (NaCl) at 0.9%. But do you know what this percentage means? The title or percentage, often also known as percentage concentration or percentage, is one of the ways that chemists use to express the concentration of solutes in relation to solutions. The title or percentage is the relationship or ratio between the quantities of the solute and the quantity of the solution. It is always worth remembering that the solution is a homogeneous mixture between solute and solvent. The title or percentage can be expressed in terms of mass (title by mass), in volume (title by volume) and also in mass per volume (title mass/volume). In the latter case, we cannot confuse it with the common concentration, which is also a mass-to-volume ratio. In this video lesson, we will quickly and easily explain how the title or percentage can be expressed, how to interpret the labels of products such as saline solution and 70% alcohol, and solve an exercise from the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM). Watch this chemistry video lesson until the end! Also, come back and watch the other chemistry lessons and also the lessons on solution concentration.
