He was active from his days as a member of the Kagoshima Jitsugyo High School soccer team, and after graduating from high school he joined JEF United Ichihara (now JEF United Ichihara Chiba) and attracted attention by scoring in four consecutive games from his debut match. In 1998, he participated in the France World Cup as the ace striker for the Japanese national team. He is currently a regular on Nippon Television's "Soccer Earth" as a soccer commentator.
