It stands out for its popular mondongo and its cajetas. Masatepe is one of the oldest towns in Nicaragua that has existed since time immemorial from the aboriginal era. The city preserves an architectural heritage of high historical and cultural value. The most outstanding buildings are its churches and residential buildings that are an emblem of pre-Hispanic and colonial identity. The San Juan Bautista Parish: is one of the most beautiful architectural works that this city has, of eclectic style and imposing façade with baroque elements. Built in 1745, it is home to the venerated image of the Lord of Trinidad. It has two towers or bell towers, in one of which you can climb and from the top observe the imposing Masaya Volcano. The Old Railway Station: was declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation (1994), it stands out for the prevalence of horizontality and monumentality. Built under the mandate of the Masatepe president, General José María Moncada. The old station is today the Handicraft Market, where the best of Masatepe's crafts and furniture are exhibited. The fundamental economic activity of the municipality is agriculture, mainly of basic grains and coffee. Trade is of great importance in the local economy, especially the marketing of wicker crafts, furniture and footwear. The artisan workshops produce excellent wooden furniture. In addition to selling to the national market, they have been shown to the world at furniture fairs in Central America and Europe, where they have been very well received. Most of these workshops have furnished hotels, restaurants and private homes. The Masatepe market is improvised, it began with approximately two blocks, now, it is a shopping center with several streets. From the early hours of the morning, when the sun barely peeks over the city of Masatepe, the populous market opens its doors from very early hours until the afternoon, it is said that the municipal market of the city will soon be built. In Masatepe there are also restaurants that offer the delicious and traditional "Sopa de Mondongo" (Mondongo Soup). Connoisseurs of typical foods of the country consider that the best mondongo soup is originally from Masatepe, one of the nine municipalities of the department of Masaya, where its preparation is very selective to create something extremely special from other soups in the country. Mondongo is the intestine and belly of cattle… although the soup itself is an element brought by the Spanish to American lands, derived from their broths, soups, stews and so on… the use of beef belly is part of Spanish gastronomy. Also the tamuga (based on potato, rice and beef), distinctive local reference identity. Other traditional foods that are referred to in Masatepe are those made from the head of the pig: cabeza de chancho and chanfaina. You will also find a great variety of Nicaraguan cajetas, from pink coconut and milk, dried grapefruit, marzipan and rice candy. Just as bread is made in different shapes, colors and flavors. The bakeries glorify the taste of the Masatepino for good bread, preparing the picos, polvorones, marquesotes, cheese bread, among others. Outside the town centre there is the Venice viewpoint and other sites from which there are views or access to the Masaya Lagoon, and panoramic views of the Masaya Volcano National Park. From the capital there are three ways to get to Masatepe: by the South Highway, passing through San Marcos; by the Masaya Highway, taking the detour to Ticuantepe and then passing through La Concha and San Marcos; or by the Masaya Highway, passing through that city until the Las Flores roundabout, where you turn to Catarina and from there take the road that passes through Niquinohomo.
