Recording of one of the introductory lectures as part of Science and Technology Week 2018, organized by the British Council and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, in the large hall of the Central Library of the Municipal Library in Prague on 5 November 2018. William Shakespeare is best known as a playwright and theater entrepreneur. But he was also a brilliant poet. It was the poems that stood at the birth of his stellar career. Even after 400 years since their creation, his Sonnets have admirers all over the world. An expert on Shakespeare's work, Professor Martin Hilský will bring us closer to the transformations of sonnets in the context of time - on their way from Sicilian notaries to W. Shakespeare to Renaissance England, and will reveal some of the secrets of love that W. Shakespeare hid in his Sonnets. Lectured by prof. PhDr. Martin Hilský, CSc., top Englishman, translator, essayist, professor of English literature, who translated Shakespeare's entire work into Czech. He is the holder of a number of important awards - e.g. Order of the British Empire, State Prize for Translation, Czech Head, Vojtěch Náprstek Medal and many others. The Science and Technology Week of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic is the largest science festival in the Czech Republic, which includes lectures, exhibitions, events at workplaces, documentary films, workshops, science cafes and many other activities across the entire republic and all scientific fields.
