Shakespeare's Dream ranks among his happy comedies. In many ways, it reflects Elizabethan wedding customs and ceremonies - especially the ceremonies associated with an aristocratic wedding. Composed in 1595–96, it is unclear whether originally as a private performance for the purpose of entertaining guests at an actual wedding reception, or directly for public performance in a theatre. In this sparkling comedy, the world of humans meets the world of supernatural beings for one night. The mischievous Puck, who serves the elf king Oberon, uses a magic flower to mix with the feelings and fates of human lovers. Even the love of Oberon and Queen Titania is not spared from misunderstandings and twists. Here, Shakespeare shows different forms of love in the story of several lovers. Lectured by prof. PhDr. Martin Hilský, CSc Recording of the lecture delivered on 10 March 2022 in the great hall of the Central Library.
