An intense conversation about the personal struggles and demons that are in Sido's new album "Paul". The headlines about Sido and his personal, dark album "Paul" have been outdoing each other regularly in recent weeks - although it is not actually coming out until December 9, 2022. It started with a long interview for "Der Spiegel" in which Sido spoke very openly about a dark phase of his life. Online the headline was "Drug crash, psychiatry, new beginning." Our colleagues at Apple Music, on the other hand, went for "Cocaine, divorce, therapy, rehab & father complexes." We know that you have to do that on the Internet these days to get traffic - but we sorted our keywords a little differently. Because, even if the conversation between Markus Kavka and Sido is mostly about coke, therapy and sex, at the beginning of everything is the pursuit of and struggle with love. Sounds cheesy - but watch the interview and you'll know what we mean. At the very latest when Sido speaks very lovingly about his relationship with his sons. But who is actually speaking here: Paul Würdig or Sido? And we're already at the heart of the dark chapters that Sido has lived through in recent years. Because a big problem for him is the separation between fictional character and private person. For the sake of simplicity, we'll mostly talk about Sido here, but during the interview in the barbershop in Berlin, where Sido is getting his hair trimmed and styled by his friend Burak, the lines between Sido and Paul Würdig often become blurred. A realization that is also new for the artist himself. At one point he said: "The problems were more in his private life." That was also where the sessions and interviews came from, where he took a wrong turn in his drug-craze with some of his views - and from which he later distanced himself. But concerts and festival appearances worked because: "Sido doesn't have much to do with drugs. He gets by. He doesn't take drugs, he just likes to smoke weed. He doesn't have any problems. Not even in his head. He's fine." At this point Markus Kavka asked: "So Paul tried to destroy Sido?" That's exactly how it was. "He really made me hate my job." "This interview with you is different. Because we know each other." When choosing the interviewer for this cover story, we chose Markus Kavka not only because he is an established music journalist, interview professional and music television authority, but also because he and Sido have known each other for a very long time. Sido once said to Markus: "Now these interviews and so on... Today with you is different because we know each other and we talk like mates. But the interviews I did last week really got to me. Being back into the topic and so on." So he says: "I did three or four interviews about the record. That's it. They'll have to write off the rest." "You'll die if you don't do it." But what are these dark times? It started when Sido's marriage was on the verge of collapse and he moved into his own apartment. He wanted to catch up on things, had a "midlife crisis", took refuge in coke, partying and quick sex. Bizarrely, that was the first time he thought more deeply about the fact that one of his problems was his father's absence. Of all things, because he was constantly bringing women home with him who made him feel like they saw a father figure in him. The turning point finally came when he visited his kids in his old house and fell asleep on the sofa, completely exhausted. His wife Charlotte opened his eyes. She was also the one who called the clinic for him, where Sido later checked into rehab and group therapy. "You'll die if you don't do this," she said to him. At this point the conversation really gets dark - and at one point Markus has no choice but to say quietly: "Dude." But we don't want to wallow in scandals like the latest gossip rag: In the last part of the interview, Sido speaks very openly and lovingly about his relationship with his sons and his longing to be recognized as the person behind the fictional character. Much like the last two songs on the album "Paul", this intimate conversation sheds a little more light.
