A few years before the Second World War, Ilie Moromete's family returns from the field. The boys run off to rest, the girls go to bathe, and Moromete goes out on the road with a cigarette in his hand. Niculae returns with the sheep from grazing. He confesses to his mother that he is tired of sheep and wishes he could go to school. Niculae begs her to convince his father to give the sheep to the shepherd and him to let him learn. In the evening, Catrina Moromete calls her family to the table and, while they are eating, she talks to Moromete about Niculae's desire... The man, however, has other thoughts... He allows Achim to go with the sheep to Bucharest for to earn money, he even cuts the acacia from the bottom of the garden, which was coveted by Bălosu. Meanwhile Nicolae goes to the school celebration. There Moromete found out that his son had won the first prize. While he is saying the poem, the child is seized with colds, and the father needs to carry him home in his arms. Learning that his other two sons (Paraschiv and Nila) wanted to run away from home, he hits them with his hair. After the final confrontation, Moromete leaves home to brag, and does not return until midnight. The next day, when he wakes up, he learns from the others that his boys broke into the girls' dowry chest, took the money, and ran away with the horses. Resigned, he realizes, however, that he has to look beyond his work. Thus, on the same day, he is forced to sell a piece of the family's land to Bălosu, and with the money taken, he buys two horses, pays the land, the bank installment, the debt to Aristide and Niculaie's school fees.
