We visited the Villa Forte Farm Hotel - considered the first farm hotel in Brazil. The history of the Villa-Forte Farm dates back to the 18th century, when Gabriel Francisco de Mé Junqueira bought from Mr. Bustamante about 200 acres of land that were part of the Boa Vista and Boa Esperança farms. The purchase included the main house, rights to the lands granted as a loan to the Central do Brasil Railway (where the Engenheiro Passos train station was built), a sugar mill whose construction dates back to 1790, a still and machinery from England to process coffee. After his death, his son-in-law, Admiral José Siqueira Villa Forte, married to his daughter Dalila, bought the property from Mr. Gabriel Francisco Mé's other daughters and became its sole owner. In 1918, he and his wife Dalila were already receiving family friends and charged a lodging fee to cover the costs, but it was only in 1932 that the farm was officially registered as a family boarding house. Villa Forte Farm was visited by Pedro II and after the Republic, José Siqueira Villa Forte acquired some pieces used by the emperor at an auction, such as his portrait, the carnation, canapés, vases and love seat that are in the hotel reception.
