Mandara is the title of a German youth series consisting of 12 parts of 25 minutes each, which was first broadcast on ZDF in the run-up to Christmas 1983. It was directed by Franz Josef Gottlieb. The series is about Shabu, a prince from a distant land who, after a shipwreck, is hidden from beach pirates by Eltje, the daughter of the village pharmacist. The pirates want to steal the prince's statue of the god, with which he wants to free his people. A shady demon (played by Horst Frank) is also after the statue and an amulet so that he can regain his full power. The first part of the story takes place in the 19th century and ends with the temporary victory of the evil goddess and the downfall of the village. The second part takes place in the late 20th century and ends with the victory over Mandara and the demon. Filming took place almost exclusively in Berlin-Rudow. There were still sets there from the film "The Laurents", which were converted into the village of "Breemster". The scenes on the beach, in the dunes and at the marina were filmed on Sylt. The opening sequence was shot in the botanical garden in Berlin. The actor Stefan Ernst, who plays Shabu, was dubbed by Joachim Tennstedt. The series was broadcast twice by ZDF, in 1983 and 1990. Mandara was also released as a radio play series by Europa. The soundtrack from the series was taken and supplemented with additional music.
